Biography

Margarida de Mello Aires, Brazilian physiologist (São Paulo 30 November 1935 – São Paulo 04 April 2019)

Pioneer in studies of the evaluation of hormonal mechanisms involved in the regulation of the acid base balance and extracellular volume of the organism, with numerous fundamental scientific works

Showed that the organism maintains the extracellular volume at the expense of pH

Pointed out the pCO2 balance in kidney

Showed how aldosterone acts on proximal tubule cells

Showed how arginine vasopressin acts on Na+/H+ exchanger via V2 luminal receptor and it is inhibited by peritubular v1 receptor

Authored Fisiologia (1991), a textbook about physiology used abroad too
