Avelino Barrio Perez, Spanish-born Argentine herpetologist and toxinologist (La Coruña, Spain 10 August 1920 – Buenos Aires 30 June 1979)

Gained international recognition for his studies on snake venoms 

Authored about 100 papers

Co-discoverer of rattlesnake neurotoxin called gyroxin (1931)

With Vital Brazil discovered veratrine properties of venom from Crotalus durissus (1950s)

With O. Vital Brazil described an apparatus for obtaining bird spider venom employing electrical stimulus

Discovered that the green coloration in frogs of the families Centrolenidae, Hylidae and Pseudidade is due partly to the pigment biliverdin (1965-8)

Performed important contributions to the study of anuran songs
