First to report the presence of an enzyme inside the bacterial virus (RNA polymerase in bacteriophage PM2) in 1971-2

With S. Ochoa first to report the role of a new initiation factors for protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells (1977)

First to report the presence of 2 translational inhibitors during plant embryogenesis

Unravelled two molecular determinants of virulence in Candida albicans

Discovered a N-acetylglucosamine catabolic pathway in highly pathogenic Candida albicans (1979-93)

First to demonstrate the involvement of calcium, calmodulin and protein phosphorylation in morphogenesis of Candida albicans (1990)

First reported the existence of a signal transduction pathway in Candida albicans (1994)

With E.W. Nester clearly demonstrated for the first time the role of virulence gene (Vir C) in Ti plasmid processing in Agrobacterium sp. (1988-9)

Isolated AmA1, a lysine-methionine rich storage protein gene from Amaranthus sp. that is one of three plant gene worldwide used for development of genetically modified crops (1992)
