Headed the works that improved Rio de Janeiro harbor (1904-10)

Managed the works of Rio Grande inlet (1909-15), recognized as the one of world’s most notable works in hydraulic engineering

Due to these works related above gained fame abroad as a harbor engineer

His brother, Honório Bicalho, civil engineer (Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais State 04 February 1839 – Rio de Janeiro 05 May 1886)

With Pereira Passos traced the railway at Mantiqueira mountain range (1875-81)

Proposed two piers at each side of the Rio Grande inlet improving a suggestion of English engineer John Hawkshaw (1883)
