Biography

Guangxian Xu, Chinese chemist (Shaoxing, Zhejiang 07 November 1920 – 28 April 2015)

Developed methods to separate and extract rare earths

Developed mathematical models for rare earth element separation processes

Developed series or cascade extraction process for rare earths

Proposed a formula that related the order of filling of atomic orbital levels with the grouping of elements in periods in the periodic table

Established the quantum chemistry calculation method for rare earth elements

Established a new theory of counter current extraction (1970s)

Found that the rare earth separation process with counter current extraction obeys a role of constant mixed extraction ratios in the extraction and the scrubbing sections respectively

Built up a theoretical model to simulate the dynamic process of the cascade from starting to the steady state

Proposed and approved that the clear and transparent organic phase in solvent extraction is really a microemulsion (1980)

Proposed a new classification of extraction systems and achieved several general rules about extraction processes

Developed one-step enlargement expert system for large-scale production of high purity rare-earth metals

Synthesized a serial of dual-oxygen complexes of quad-core rare earths
