Biography
Marcelino Cereijido Mattioli, Argentine-born Mexican cytologist (Buenos Aires 29 January 1933 –
Expert on molecular and cell physiology
Authored 350 papers and 14 books (with over 5,000 citations)
Much of his work are regarded as citation classics
Developed experimental techniques for studying basic mechanisms of transport epithelium and elucidated them
Discovered how cultured cells recognize each other, associate to close the surfaces between them and don’t let the entrance of certain substances
With P. F. Curran developed a method for measuring K influx into the epithelial cells of frog skin from the inside solution in J. Gen. Physiol. (1965)
With D.D. Sabatini introduced Madin-Darby canine kidney cell culture for the study of epithelial cell polarity (1970s)
With R.G. Contreras, J.J. Bolívar & A. Lazaro. A novel type of cell-cell coperation between epithelial cells. J. Membr. Biol. (1995)
With I. Larre showed the role of the ouabain in the cell communication (2006)
With I. Larre. Na+, K+-ATPase is the putative membrane receptor of hormone ouabain. Comm. Integr. Biol. 3(6):625-8, 2010
