Authored a clinical description of black piedra. The causative agent was named Piedraia hortae in his honor

Described the asci in the nodules of black piedra known as bright spots or Horta cysts
Described the first case of tinea nigra and isolated its causative agent as Cladosporium werneckii. This fungus was incorporated in genus Hortaea later.
