Prafulla Chandra Ray, Indian chemist (Raruli-Katipara Village, Khulna District, Bangladesh 02 August 1861 – Calcutta 16 June 1944)

Authored over 150 papers

Famous as historian of Indian chemistry

His thesis Conjugated Sulphates of Copper Magnesium Group: A study of isomorphous mixtures and molecular combinations was judged the best in Edinburgh University winning the Hope Prize (1887) 

His publications on mercurous nitrite and its derivatives brought him international recognition

First prepared mercurous nitrite (1896)

Synthesized ammonium nitrite in pure form 

Characterized and prepared many compounds of zinc, cadmium, mercuric iodide, etc.
