Puran Singh, Indian plant chemist (Abbotabad District, Punjab 17 February 1881 – Dehradun 31 March 1931)

Determined the oil yielding qualities of many oilseeds

Analyzed, extracted and isolated essential oils from many forest tree and plants

Devised improved methods of extraction, distillation and purification of turpentine oil from various sources like pine trees

Developed a new condenser for distillation of camphor oil

Devised a chemical test for estimation of tannins using nickel hydroxide

Devised a technique for manufacturing charcoal briquettes from Indian woods

Patented a novel technique for cleaning and discolouring crystalline from raw sugar
