Biography

Manoel Dias de Abreu, Brazilian radiologist (São Paulo 04 January 1891 – Rio de Janeiro 30 January 1962) 

He was chief of Central Laboratory of Radiology at Hotel Dieu.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Idealized simultaneous tomographies technique (1947)

Developed a device for taking photographs from gastric mucosa

Demonstrated that mediastinal contours radiological view are due to its anatomic contact to pulmonary transparence and contrast surface extent (1924)

Enunciated radiogeometry principles in Estudos Radiológicos sobre o pulmão e o mediastino (1924) 

Developed densimetry and realized the first experiments involving pulmonary densimetry

Developed a technique for distinguishing pericardial effusion from cardiac hypertrophy 

Created fluoroscopic écran, Abreu collective micrometer gauge, vibratory tomography and kymography

Invented roentgenphotography or abreugraphy (1936), known in other countries as mass radiography, miniature chest radiography, roentgenfluorography, radiophotography, photoradioscopy and photofluorography

Conceived  tracheobroncoalveolar or pulmonary lavage (1944)

Authored Le Radiodiagnostic dans la tuberculose pleuro-pulmonaire (1918) where established the scientific foundations of lung radiology

With Brunetti formulated the law of tangent incidences 

Eponym of Manoel de Abreu position (distinguishes renal lodge from biliary spaces)
