Biography

John Barry Hawthorne, South African geologist and entrepneur (Kimberley, Northern Cape Province 19 May 1934 – Scarborough, Cape Town 15 November 2018)

Gave relevant contributions to kimberlite geology, diamond studies and upper mantle geology

Showed that kimberlites were undoubtedly magmas

With J.B. Dawson. Magmatic sedimentation and carbonatitic differentiation in kimberlite sills at Benfontein, South Africa. J. Geol. Soc. 129(1):61-85, 1973

With J.W. Harris, M.M. Osterveld & E. Wehmeyer. A classification scheme for diamond, and a comparative study of South African diamond characteristics. Phys. Chem. Earth 9:765-83, 1975

Proposed the composite geological model for many southern African pipes

Model of a kimberlite pipe. Phys. Chem. Earth 9:1-15, 1975
