Manali Kallat Vainu Bappu, Indian astronomer (Madras 10 August 1927 – Munich, Germany 19 August 1982)

Discovered Bappu-Bok-Newkirk comet (1949)

Observed that width of emission lines of ionized calcium in the chromosphere of late type-stars was proportional to the absolute luminosity of these stars known as Wilson-Bappu effect (1957) 

Showed that behavior of sodium emission in comets near perihelion passage as influenced by solar wind effects
