Ray Jui Wu, US/Chinese plant geneticist (Beijing 14 August 1928 – Ithaca 10 February 2008)

Son of biochemist Hsien Wu

ACHIEVEMENTS

Developed the first method for determining the nucleotide sequence of DNA (1970-3)

Introduced the method of using synthetic oligonucleotide linkers and adaptors to increase the efficiency of manipulating and cloning blunt-ended DNA (1976)

With colleagues he was the first to transfer successfully useful genes from a dicotyledoneous plant (potato) to a monocotyledoneous plant (rice) in 1990s
