Augusto Barbosa da Silva, Brazilian mining engineer (Nova Lima, Minas Gerais State 15 Sep 1860 – Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais State 16 Jun 1939) ACHIEVEMENTS  Regarded as one of the world pioneers in electrometallurgy  Held many patents related to iron and steel production employing electricity  Patented a process for production of pig iron, iron and its alloys jointly with a eletrical furnace that make it in 1902 (with Joseph Gerspacher) Designed and built the first electric furnace in the world for production of iron and steel (1905) Patented and constructed an innovative electrical furnace for ferromanganese production (1908) that attracted international reputation HONORS     Gold Medal, International exposition of Industry and Commerce, Torino, 1911.
